It’s not procrastination if you… - randomcreativemoments

It’s not procrastination if you…

…are giving yourself a moment away to solve a problem

I used to think that I had to wait for inspiration or some fabulous idea to be really creative. I’ve found that when I sit down to do the work (or play) of creativity on a more consistent basis, the things that feel really creative come more often.

The thing is that sometimes it's actually helpful to allow something to mull around in your mind when you're trying to get to a solution. And sometimes you figure things out in the process without working harder than you need to.

Dilemma

In my most recent blog post, I told you about my experience trying to vectorize my sweet bird in Illustrator but she was “too wonky.” Then I re-drew her in the Procreate app on my iPad but she looked too clean and lacked some of the sketchy aspects I wanted to keep.

I knew that there was a way to figure out my creative challenge but wasn’t sure what it was.

The solution!

Yes! There was a solution and it was just as I thought. I needed to play with a feature in Adobe Illustrator called image trace. Image trace converts images into vectors. The ultimate solution is really easy.

This may or may not be relevant to you but…this is what worked for me:

  1. Open your image in Illustrator.
  2. Go to File > Place.
  3. Select Image Trace and choose the Sketched Art option.
  4. Change the Mode to Color.
  5. Select "Ignore Color (White)" and then hit "Expand."

I thought I was going to have to fiddle with the threshold, paths, or noise but I didn’t.

Here's what this sweet bird looks like after being vectorized with my sketchy style preserved! She's still a work in progress but I'm happy with things so far.

Now that I’ve found the spell, I mean solution, let’s turn our attention to a bewitching question:

Is this your spooky situation?

Are you drowning in sticky notes and scattered papers like fallen leaves?

Haunted by exhaustion?

Spooked by stress?

Cursed by chaos, constantly running but never reaching the finish line?
